Description

Portuguese Macau refers to the period from 1557 to 1999, when the territory was under Portuguese administration and served as a key trading post between Europe and Asia, developing a distinctive blend of Portuguese and Chinese culture. After the 1999 handover to China, Macau became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) under the "one country, two systems" framework, retaining a high degree of autonomy—including its own currency, the Macanese pataca (MOP), which continues to be issued by the Monetary Authority of Macao.

Lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. The Lion dance is usually performed during the Chinese New Year and other traditional, cultural and religious festivals. It may also be performed at important occasions such as business opening events, special celebrations or wedding ceremonies, or may be used to honour special guests by the Chinese communities.
