Yaroslavl played a significant role during World War II as a major industrial and logistical center far from the front lines. Its factories were swiftly converted for wartime production, supplying the Red Army with essential equipment, munitions, and materials. The city’s workers—many of them women and teenagers—labored tirelessly under difficult conditions, ensuring uninterrupted output. Yaroslavl also hosted several evacuated enterprises and thousands of refugees, offering both industrial support and humanitarian aid. For its vital contribution to the Soviet war effort and the heroic labor of its people, Yaroslavl was later awarded the honorary title "City of Labour Valour."

The Ya-12 was a Soviet diesel-powered artillery tractor developed and produced during World War II, with mass production beginning in 1943 at the Yaroslavl Tractor Plant (YaTZ). Designed to tow heavy artillery and transport supplies across difficult terrain, the Ya-12 became a crucial vehicle on the Eastern Front, known for its reliability and rugged construction. Its production in Yaroslavl symbolized the city's industrial resilience and contribution to the Soviet war effort, especially as many factories had been evacuated and repurposed for military needs.
